BREAKING: Animal activists say they are incredulous that a sheep export ship that caused thousands of animals to die in hot, cramped conditions are allowed to resume loading sheep and leave Fremantle port at the end of the week.
Stop Live Exports campaign manager Katrina Love said she was calling for an industry-wide ban on live exporting.
“The 40 year old twin-tiered livestock export vessel had loaded in Adelaide and came to Fremantle to load some more,” Ms Love said.
Ms Love said the ship has had a “horrific record” involving deaths in the live animal trade.
She said industry experts claim the deaths were an “unexpected heat” event.
An Agriculture Department spokesman yesterday declined to provide detail about the specific animal welfare arrangements for the Bader III.
"Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) include a requirement to have an accredited veterinarian and an accredited Stock-man on board — who are responsible for managing and reporting on the health and welfare of animals on the voyage," the spokesman said.
Josh Wilson (Federal Member for Fremantle) was one of the many protesters in the crowd. Mr Wilson said, "this trade is so wrong, it's inherently wrong and it needs to stop".
Protester Marie Wilson said, "the live export industry is absolutely disgusting and repulsive, and it needs to stop".
Ms Wilson has been protesting to ban live export for over 5-years now and still nothing has changed.
Protester Alex O'Donnell who travelled from Exmouth with his family said simply just to “stop live exports”.
“Everything about this is cruel, cruelty that money comes before the animals well-being,” he said.
More details to come.
